Mental Health and Counselling Resources in Calgary
Visits to a psychiatrist are covered by Alberta Health because a psychiatrist is a medical doctor. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication to treat mental illness, while psychologists and counsellors cannot. Counselling services provided by psychologists or non-physician mental health therapists are not covered by Alberta Health regardless of whether a referral is made by a patient’s physician.
Psychologists can be referred through a family physician but do not have to be. Psychologists and counsellors can be located by language preference, issues, location, etc. through Psychology Today

It’s important to check your medical insurance coverage before booking counselling sessions to ensure that the provider is covered under your plan, as many insurance plans will help pay for therapy costs. If your insurance does not cover counselling, there are still options available.
- Many therapists offer sliding scale fees, which adjust the cost of sessions based on your financial situation, making therapy more affordable.
- Additionally, some government grants or subsidies may be available to assist with the cost of counselling for individuals with financial need.
- Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), offered through some workplaces, can provide a set number of free counselling sessions.
- Finally, there are various free or low-cost counselling services provided by community organizations, non-profits, or government-funded programs that can help you access support even if you’re on a tight budget.
