What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects how a person’s brain regulates attention, behavior, and impulses. It’s not just about being easily distracted or hyperactive—it’s a condition that can impact focus, organization, time management, and memory. ADHD is often present from childhood, but it can also affect adults who may have never been diagnosed. Symptoms can range from difficulty staying organized to feeling overwhelmed by tasks, making it challenging to succeed in both personal and professional life. With the right support, individuals with ADHD can learn to harness their strengths and thrive.

It’s estimated that around 4-5% of adults have ADHD, but only about 20-30% of them are diagnosed. This means that a significant percentage, approximately 70-80%, of adults with ADHD may remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The reasons for this can include lack of awareness, overlapping symptoms with other conditions, and the tendency for ADHD symptoms to be attributed to stress, anxiety, or other mental health issues.

Why Consider an ADHD Assessment?

An ADHD assessment allows you to have a deeper understanding of how your brain works, as it can manifest differently with people. This means that even with the same diagnosis, symptoms and experiences with ADHD can vary between people. Through a thorough evaluation, our skilled professionals will provide insight into your unique strengths and challenges. We’ll work with you to uncover how ADHD might be affecting your life and give you a roadmap for success.

Assessing ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) in both adults and children involves distinct approaches due to the differences in developmental stages, symptoms, and how ADHD manifests over time. Below are the key differences and benefits of assessing ADHD in adults versus children:

  • Children: ADHD symptoms in children are typically more noticeable due to behaviors like hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. Assessments focus on how these behaviors affect school performance, social interactions, and family dynamics. The assessment may include teacher reports, parent observations, and standardized tests to measure attention and activity levels.
  • Adults: ADHD symptoms in adults often look different, with a focus on issues like disorganization, difficulty maintaining focus at work, time management problems, and struggles in maintaining relationships. The assessment may involve self-report questionnaires, interviews, and a thorough review of the person’s history to identify childhood symptoms that were missed or overlooked. Many adults seek an ADHD assessment in Calgary during stressful life transitions and they cannot ignore the impact ADHD has in their lives.

Common FAQs with ADHD

What is the difference between ADD and ADHD?

While the terms ADD (Attention-Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) are often used interchangeably, there is a key difference between the two:

  • ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder): This is the umbrella term that includes both attention difficulties and hyperactivity/impulsivity. ADHD can present in three different types, based on symptoms:
    1. Inattentive Type: Difficulty paying attention, staying organized, following through on tasks, etc.
    2. Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: Exhibiting behaviors like restlessness, difficulty staying seated, and acting impulsively.
    3. Combined Type: A combination of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
  • ADD (Attention-Deficit Disorder): ADD is an older term that was used before ADHD was fully defined. ADD refers to the type of ADHD where the person primarily struggles with inattention and focus without the hyperactivity or impulsivity seen in other forms of ADHD. ADD is now considered a subset of ADHD, specifically the Inattentive Type.

In short: ADD is a term that is no longer officially used; it’s now referred to as ADHD, Inattentive Type. ADHD, as a whole, encompasses both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive behaviors.

What causes ADHD?

The exact cause of ADHD is unknown. However, research suggests genetic, neurological, and environmental factors contribute to its development. Studies have shown that ADHD tends to run in families, indicating that genes may play a role. Additionally, brain imaging studies have shown differences in the brain structure and function of people with ADHD compared to those without the disorder.

How common is ADHD?

ADHD occurs in an estimated 3 to 5 percent of preschool and school-age children. It often continues into adolescence and adulthood.

Can ADHD be cured?

There is no cure for ADHD, but with appropriate treatment and support, individuals can manage symptoms effectively and lead successful lives.
