Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about counselling, psychology services, assessments, fees, insurance, or booking an appointment? Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive at Innerlogue Therapy & Psychology.

We provide in-person counselling and psychology services at our Calgary locations in Kensington, Midnapore, and Harvest Hills, as well as virtual therapy across Alberta.

Getting Started

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist or therapist?

No. You do not need a referral to access counselling or psychology services at Innerlogue Therapy & Psychology.

You can contact us directly to book an appointment or consultation. We also accept referrals from family physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, other healthcare professionals, lawyers, schools, and community organizations.

Some insurance plans may have their own requirements, so we recommend checking your benefits before your first appointment.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. We offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to help you determine which therapist or service may be the right fit.

During the consultation, our team can learn more about what you are looking for, answer questions about our services, and help match you with an appropriate therapist.

If we are not the right fit, we will do our best to suggest possible next steps or other resources.

Do you have psychologists accepting new clients in Calgary?

Our availability changes regularly depending on the therapist, service, location, and appointment time you are looking for.

With therapists working across multiple Calgary locations and virtually throughout Alberta, we may have several options available.

Contact our administrative team or check our online booking system for current availability.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Appointment availability varies depending on the therapist, location, service, and your preferred appointment times.

Clients with flexible schedules may have more options. Our administrative team can help you explore current availability and find a therapist who may be a good fit.

How do I choose the right therapist?

The right therapist depends on your concerns, goals, preferences, and the type of therapeutic relationship you are looking for.

You may want to consider a therapist’s experience, areas of interest, therapeutic approach, communication style, cultural background, languages spoken, location, and availability.

Our administrative team can help match you with a therapist based on what you are looking for.

Can I request a specific therapist?

Yes. If you have reviewed our therapist profiles and would like to work with a particular therapist, you are welcome to request them.

If you are unsure who to choose, our administrative team can recommend therapists based on your concerns, preferred location, availability, language, and other preferences.

Can I switch therapists if it doesn’t feel like the right fit?

Yes. Finding the right therapeutic relationship is important.

Sometimes a therapist may be highly qualified but simply not feel like the right match for you. If this happens, you can speak with your therapist or contact our administrative team about exploring another therapist within Innerlogue.

What if I don’t know what kind of therapy I need?

That’s okay. Many people contact us knowing that something is not going well but aren’t sure what type of therapy or support would be most helpful.

Our free 15-minute consultation can help us understand your concerns and recommend a possible next step.

Do I need a mental health diagnosis to attend counselling?

No. You do not need to have a diagnosed mental health condition to benefit from counselling.

People seek therapy for many reasons, including stress, relationships, parenting, grief, work difficulties, major life changes, personal growth, emotional regulation, and simply wanting to understand themselves better.

Therapy & Counselling

What types of counselling and therapy do you provide?

Our Calgary therapists work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families experiencing a wide range of concerns.

These may include anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, ADHD, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, chronic pain, stress, burnout, parenting concerns, emotional regulation difficulties, and major life transitions.

Depending on the therapist, approaches may include CBT, EMDR, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, DBT-informed therapy, mindfulness, solution-focused therapy, person-centred therapy, narrative therapy, and play-based approaches.

What is the difference between a psychologist, provisional psychologist, and counsellor?

Our team includes professionals with different training backgrounds and professional designations.

Registered Psychologists have completed the education, supervised practice, examinations, and registration requirements necessary to practise psychology independently in Alberta.

Provisional Psychologists are completing the supervised practice requirements toward registration as psychologists.

Counsellors and therapists may have graduate-level training in counselling, social work, psychotherapy, or related fields and may be registered with their respective professional organizations.

The professional designation you choose may affect insurance coverage, so we recommend checking your benefits before booking.

Do you provide counselling for children and teenagers?

Yes. Innerlogue provides counselling and psychological services for children and adolescents.

Depending on the child’s age and concerns, treatment may involve individual sessions, parent consultations, family involvement, play-based approaches, or other evidence-informed interventions.

Our team can help families determine which therapist and type of support may be most appropriate.

Do you provide couples counselling?

Yes. We offer couples and relationship counselling for concerns such as communication difficulties, recurring conflict, rebuilding trust, intimacy, major life transitions, parenting disagreements, and relationship disconnection.

Some therapists have additional training in approaches such as the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy.

We also offer premarital counselling using the PREPARE/ENRICH relationship assessment.

How often should I attend therapy?

The frequency of therapy depends on your concerns, goals, schedule, finances, and your therapist’s recommendations.

Some clients begin with weekly or biweekly sessions, while others attend less frequently. You and your therapist can discuss a schedule that makes sense for your circumstances.

How long does therapy usually take?

There is no standard number of sessions that works for everyone.

Some people seek short-term counselling for a specific concern, while others benefit from longer-term therapy involving more complex or longstanding difficulties.

Your therapist can regularly review your goals and progress with you.

Can psychologists prescribe medication?

Psychologists in Alberta do not prescribe medication.

If medication may be helpful, you can discuss this with your family physician, psychiatrist, or another qualified medical professional. With your consent, your therapist may also collaborate with other members of your healthcare team when appropriate.

Do you provide Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) counselling?

Yes. Innerlogue provides psychological and counselling services for individuals experiencing emotional or psychological difficulties following motor vehicle accidents.

Treatment may address concerns such as trauma symptoms, PTSD, driving anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, chronic pain, sleep difficulties, and changes in everyday functioning.

Our administrative team is also familiar with MVA documentation and billing processes.

Psychological Assessments

Do you offer psychological assessments in Calgary?

Yes. Innerlogue Therapy & Psychology offers several types of psychological assessment services.

Depending on your needs and current availability, services may include ADHD assessments, psychoeducational assessments, gifted assessments, and autism assessments.

An initial consultation can help determine which type of assessment may be appropriate.

What is a psychoeducational assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment helps identify an individual’s learning profile, cognitive strengths and challenges, and factors that may be affecting academic performance.

Assessments may explore areas such as intellectual functioning, attention, memory, academic achievement, executive functioning, and learning difficulties.

They may be helpful when there are concerns about learning disabilities, ADHD, giftedness, academic difficulties, or the need for school accommodations.

Do you offer ADHD assessments?

Yes. We provide ADHD assessment services for clients seeking greater clarity about difficulties involving attention, impulsivity, organization, executive functioning, or related concerns.

Symptoms associated with ADHD can sometimes overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep difficulties, and other concerns. A psychological assessment can help develop a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to a person’s difficulties.

How do I know which psychological assessment I need?

You don’t need to determine this on your own.

If you are unsure whether you need an ADHD assessment, psychoeducational assessment, autism assessment, gifted assessment, or another service, contact our team. We can discuss what you are hoping to understand and help determine an appropriate next step.

Fees, Insurance & Direct Billing

How much does therapy cost in Calgary?

Fees depend on the professional designation of your therapist and the service being provided.

Counselling and therapy are generally billed per session, while psychological assessments have separate fees depending on the type and complexity of the assessment.

Please visit our Fees & Policies page or contact our administrative team for current rates.

Are psychology and counselling services covered by insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for psychological and counselling services, but coverage varies significantly between insurance providers and individual plans.

Before your first appointment, we recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your annual coverage, which professional designations are covered, whether you require a referral, whether psychological assessments are covered, and whether direct billing is available.

Clients are responsible for understanding the requirements and limits of their individual insurance plans.

Do you offer direct billing?

Yes. Innerlogue Therapy & Psychology is able to direct bill many insurance providers and benefit plans when permitted by the insurer.

Direct billing availability depends on your individual insurance plan, therapist, and service.

In some situations, clients may need to pay for their appointment and submit their receipt to their insurance provider for reimbursement.

Do you provide receipts for insurance reimbursement?

Yes. Receipts are provided following payment and include the information typically required to submit a claim to your insurance provider.

Coverage and reimbursement remain subject to the terms of your individual benefit plan.

What payment methods do you accept?

Payment options may include credit card, debit, and e-transfer.

A valid credit card may be required to remain securely on file when booking appointments.

Do you offer lower-cost counselling?

Lower-cost counselling options may be available through therapists with different professional designations and through practicum students or interns when placements are available.

Fees and availability change throughout the year. Contact our administrative team to ask about current lower-cost counselling options.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

We understand that schedules can change. Innerlogue has a cancellation and rescheduling policy for appointments cancelled without sufficient notice.

Please review our current Fees & Policies page when booking for the applicable notice period and fees.

Insurance companies generally do not reimburse charges for missed appointments or late cancellations.

Availability depends on the therapist and service required.

Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Both virtual and in-person therapy can be effective. The best option depends on your concerns, preferences, privacy at home, comfort with technology, and the type of service you require.

Some clients prefer the convenience of virtual therapy, while others value being physically present with their therapist.

Your therapist can help you determine which format may be appropriate for your needs.

Evening and weekend availability depends on the individual therapist and location.

Contact our administrative team or check our online booking system for current appointment availability.

Can I attend appointments at different Innerlogue locations?

Depending on your therapist’s schedule and where they practise, you may have options for in-person or virtual appointments.

Not every therapist works from every Innerlogue location, so please check your therapist’s profile or contact our administrative team for assistance.

Privacy & Your Appointments

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Psychologists and therapists are required to protect the privacy and confidentiality of client information in accordance with applicable professional, ethical, and legal requirements.

There are certain circumstances in which information may need to be disclosed, such as situations involving an imminent risk of serious harm or where disclosure is otherwise required by law.

Your therapist will review confidentiality and its limits with you during the informed consent process.

Will you communicate with my family doctor, psychiatrist, school, or another professional?

We may collaborate with other healthcare professionals or relevant service providers when it is appropriate and you have provided the necessary consent.

There are limited exceptions where disclosure may be required by law or professional obligations.

What should I expect at my first therapy appointment?

Your first appointment gives you and your therapist an opportunity to get to know one another and better understand what brings you to counselling.

You may discuss your current concerns, relevant history, relationships, strengths, previous experiences with therapy, and what you hope will change.

Together, you can begin developing goals and discussing what therapy may look like.

You do not need to have everything figured out before your first appointment.
